Reversed Meaning

Evil fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness.

The drama of the great trap collapses into something smaller and meaner. Pettiness, blindness, and a weak refusal to look are the chain now. You are not in the grip of a grand passion. You are staying for a minor advantage, a stingy fear, a joke at someone's expense, a habit too small to call destiny. In an ordinary week you see the loop and squint until it becomes fate again. The torch points at the ground, lighting nothing you can use. Drop the performance of being powerless. Name the petty payoff in one sentence: the gossip, the hit of outrage, the comfort of feeling slightly ashamed. Blindness is a choice you renew. Open your eyes and the altar shrinks.

Ambition has picked up a chain. The role, client, or grind pays you in a currency you no longer want to admit: status, fear of a gap on the resume, the high of being indispensable, access you have to flatter for. Extraordinary effort keeps a bad structure standing. That effort is not virtue when the torch lights only the floor. Check the bargain. If the work requires you to ignore a harm, bind a colleague, or sell a version of yourself you have to drink off at night, the altar is the office. You may not quit by Friday. You can refuse one counterfeit task, tell one truth about the load, and stop calling captivity loyalty. Force that runs you is not the same as strength you aim.

Feelings

You feel hooked, fascinated, a little thrilled, and smaller than you were last month. The emotion has heat and a metallic aftertaste, shame or contempt that arrives right after the hit. You may blame a person, a feed, a substance of attention, when the loop is the feeling of being bound and therefore excused from choosing. There can be grief under the appetite, a fear that without the chain you would be no one in particular. Do not romanticize the darkness into depth. Pettiness often wears the mask of a grand wound. If your body tightens and your mind builds a case for staying, that is the chain heating up. The feeling is information about a bond. It is not a personality you have to keep.

Delete the contact, decline the extra shift that only feeds the bind, unsubscribe, put the substance or the screen that hooks you out of the room for a night, end the joke that needs a victim. Tell one adult what the bargain costs, without turning the confession into a new performance. Do not replace the chain with a lecture about your shadows. When the urge hits, do a plain physical thing for ten minutes and then choose again. Look at the loose loop. It was never locked the way you described it. Step off the block you built.

Symbolism

The design is an accommodation, mean or harmony, between several motives mentioned in the first part. The Horned Goat of Mendes, with wings like those of a bat, is standing on an altar. At the pit of the stomach there is the sign of Mercury. The right hand is upraised and extended, being the reverse of that benediction which is given by the Hierophant in the fifth card. In the left hand there is a great flaming torch, inverted towards the earth. A reversed pentagram is on the forehead. There is a ring in front of the altar, from which two chains are carried to the necks of two figures, male and female. These are analogous with those of the fifth card, as if Adam and Eve after the Fall. Hereof is the chain and fatality of the material life. The figures are tailed, to signify the animal nature, but there is human intelligence in the faces, and he who is exalted above them is not to be their master for ever. Even now, he is also a bondsman, sustained by the evil that is in him and blind to the liberty of service. With more than his usual derision for the arts which he pretended to respect and interpret as a master therein, Éliphas Lévi affirms that the Baphometic figure is occult science and magic. Another commentator says that in the Divine world it signifies predestination, but there is no correspondence in that world with the things which below are of the brute. What it does signify is the Dweller on the Threshold without the Mystical Garden when those are driven forth therefrom who have eaten the forbidden fruit.
